Hohner Melodica. The first melodicas were made in the 1950's by the Hohner Company. Hohner melodica is basically a reed organ that is powered by breath and is small and lightweight enough to be held by the hand. Since the first melodica came out, other manufacturers also came up with their own versions of the melodica. Some of these are the Tokai Pianica, the Suzuki Melodion, the Clavietta, the Yamaha Pianica, the Silvertone Organomica, and many more.

The melodica can be a bit confusing to hold or play especially if this is your first time to come across the instrument. This is because it looks like a cross between a wind instrument and a piano. However, all you have to do is support the instrument with your thumb while putting your four fingers in the strap. Remember to close your mouth securely around the mouthpiece to make sure that no air escapes.

Breathing and technique are the two main things to focus on when playing the melodica. Simply breathing gently into the mouthpiece can instantly create a smooth sound. If you want to create a thicker or heavier sound, then you can use the same air that you use when you are whistling. Just remember not to blow heavily on the mouthpiece or this will ruin the alignment of the instrument.

Preserve and protect

Care and maintenance for hohner melodica is not complicated. Just make sure that you keep the instrument in its case when you are not using it. The case will protect it from dust, dirt, pets, moisture and the prying hands of small children.
